Movie theaters

Movie theaters should be dead.

Yet, the latest statistics from the MPAA show international box office receipts are up 35% over five years ago and even US receipts are up 6% over the same period. This despite the fact that a ticket costs more than a monthly subscription to NetFlix, which many can watch on home systems exceeding the sound and video quality of the theater.

And yet the movie theaters are packed. Why?

Time reports "The National Association of Theater Owners notes that “movie theaters do especially well during economic downturns,” and that during six of the past eight recessions in the U.S., box office and admissions sales increased."

I think it is more than that.

Much like bars and restaurants (alcohol and food is MUCH cheaper prepared at home), theaters offer both an escape from the home and a shared experience - ever hear folks laughing in unison at a funny scene or line? Or applauding at the end of a good movie? Much like houses of worship (something that can also be done at home), humans are tribal, and need to connect.

How are you connecting?

The experience matters
